Barry Sanders, a former NFL running back, was recently granted a second chance at life following a serious health scare. The Detroit Lions responded by sending a supportive message to one of their former players during his period of testing.

The Detroit Lions selected Sanders third overall in the 1989 draft, and he made an immediate impression, winning Offensive Rookie of the Year. He became one of the league’s best players over the course of the following ten years.

Surprisingly, he retired in 1998 at the age of 30, just 1,457 yards short of becoming the NFL’s all-time leading rusher behind Walter Payton. He gave the Lions’ organizational problems and their deteriorating play as reasons for his choice. Even so, Sanders left his mark as one of the most commanding and captivating players of his time with 15,269 rushing yards and 99 rushing touchdowns at the end of his career. In 2004, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Lions retired his iconic #20 jersey.
