The racing legend’s life continues to influence sportsmen worldwide forty years after his passing, and his absence still saddens those at home. on May 29, 2015, by Mary Pilon. Steve Prefontaine attended a post-race celebration on May 29, 1975, after winning his 5,000-meter race at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, earlier in the day. His friend Geoff Hollister’s home, nestled among trees in the town’s older, more stately neighborhood, was the venue for the celebration. The atmosphere was joyous and the night was clear. Among the notable runners present at Hollister’s that evening were Frank Shorter, Kenny Moore, and Jon Anderson, the 1973 Boston Marathon champion and son of Eugene’s mayor at the time. Ray and Elfriede, Prefontaine’s parents, even made a prior visit.
