Collingwood star Jordan De Goey has flown to Doha to undertake a 10-day groin and abdomen conditioning program as he looks to stay injury free in 2025, reports The Age.
De Goey, who headed to Doha last week along with Magpies fitness boss Jarrod Wade, is hoping to overcome a grim run of injuries that restricted the 28-year old to 13 of a possible 23 games in 2024 and limited his on-field output as the club tumbled out of the top eight as reigning premiers.
The 2023 premiership player is visiting the world-renowned Aspetar clinic — the same clinic attended by Richmond’s Josh Gibcus and Hawthorn’s Changkouth Jiath last season — to complete a program specifically designed for him and his recent injuries by strength and conditioning experts.
De Goey will be ready to return for the start of Collingwood’s pre-season on November 25 along with the rest of his teammates.
“Jordan, together with the club, made the decision to spend 10 days in his off-season with high-performance professionals in Doha, completing a training program aimed at improving the groin and abdominal issues he experienced during the 2024 season,” Wade said in a statement to The Age.
“Jordan is committed to getting his body right, working alongside world-leading professionals to ensure he is best prepared for the upcoming pre-season and the 2025 campaign.
It marks the second time De Goey has headed overseas for injury treatment, having flown to Germany in 2019 to see renowned hamstring guru Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt.
Responding to the news, Cats great Cameron Mooney thinks it’s a “smart” move to ensure De Goey is in prime condition for next season to help Collingwood push back up the ladder.
“Does Collingwood push for a premiership if Jordan De Goey isn’t fully fit? I don’t think they do. So this is a great move,” Mooney said on SEN.
“Do whatever you need to do to get Jordan De Goey as fit as you can if you’re Collingwood … it’s learning techniques, methods and programs for the next 12 months.
“It will be a bit treatment. They will go through his body and check everything out and say: ‘Right this is what we believe you should do’, then take that program back with you.
“Ten days will be fantastic to get a professional in that area to completely go over the body and tell you what you need to do.”
It comes after Seven’s Mitch Cleary reported in September that Carlton midfielder Adam Cerra headed to Qatar to receive treatment on soft tissue issues.
