LAWRENCE — Kansas football will officially have a new defensive coordinator next season with Brian Borland announcing his retirement.
Borland, who’s spent the past four seasons with the Jayhawks under head coach Lance Leipold, has a history with Leipold that spans back to Buffalo and even Wisconsin-Whitewater. The two made the jump from Division III to Division I together from Wisconsin-Whitewater to Buffalo. They made the jump from a Group of Five program at Buffalo to what is now considered a Power Four team at Kansas, and now the responsibilities for what improvements the Jayhawks can make with the defense and program in general will fall on other coaches on staff at KU.
Kansas’ co-defensive coordinator/cornerbacks coach from the 2024 season in D.K. McDonald will follow Borland in the role as the Jayhawks’ defensive coordinator. It’s yet another internal hire Leipold has made after a coordinator change following the end of the regular season. Jim Zebrowski is the team’s new offensive coordinator, and he was the co-offensive coordinator prior to Jeff Grimes reportedly leaving for Wisconsin.
