Penn State officially announced Monday the widely reported hiring of former Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. Knowles was hired a week after the Buckeyes’ 34-23 national title win against Notre Dame, their first championship win in a decade
Although Knowles’ hiring officially begins a new era in State College, Action Network’s Brett McMurphy tweeted that the Knowles-Ohio State relationship didn’t end smoothly
Amid the team’s championship celebration in Columbus Sunday, one key staff member wasn’t invited.
“Ohio State DC Jim Knowles was asked by school not to attend Buckeyes’ national title celebration while he deliberated his options, source said,” McMurphy wrote. “Knowles’ representation tried to reach deal w/OSU week before title game & immediately after, but eventual offer was “well below” the competition, source said. Knowles signed a 3-year, $9.3 million deal w/Penn State Sunday.”

It’s a direct shot at Knowles’ success across three years in Columbus. The Buckeyes only trailed for six minutes the entire postseason, giving up a grand total of 75 points through four games. Their fewest came in the Cotton Bowl against Texas, winning 28-14, thanks to a now-legendary Jack Sawyer fumble-turned-touchdown to punch the Buckeyes’ ticket to Atlanta, Ga.
Amidst the bad blood, Knowles said he is excited to coach close to home and help lead Penn State back to the postseason to continue to thrive under coach James Franklin.
“I am excited for this opportunity to join Penn State Football,” Knowles said. “I would like to thank Coach Franklin, Pat Kraft, and President Neeli Bendapudi for this opportunity to be the defensive coordinator at Penn State. I have always had a ton of respect for Coach Franklin and the program he has built here. I look forward to working with this tremendous staff and group of student-athletes and am ready to get to work.”
Franklin agrees, complimenting Knowles’ astute football knowledge and understanding of how the Penn State program operates daily.
“He’s a strong strategist and excellent defensive mind,” Franklin said. “He reflects the core values our culture of excellence is built upon. We look forward to having Jim and his family join us in Happy Valley.”
Knowles will reunite with his ex-coach, Ryan Day, as Penn State travels to Columbus to play Ohio State in early November. Assuming both teams are ranked in the top-10, it’s safe to pencil in the possibility of this fall’s meeting as one of the most anticipated in rivalry history.
For now, the Big Ten offseason rolls on, as does the direction of both programs’ success.
