Most people seem to agree at this point that Cam Ward of the University of Miami Hurricanes is the best quarterback prospect in this year’s upcoming NFL draft.
He threw for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns during the 2024 season while leading the Hurricanes to an appearance in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. His arm strength and mobility make him a tantalizing prospect.
There has been lots of debate about where Ward will be taken in the draft since there is no clear consensus on who the best player is in this year’s draft class. But there has been a growing sense that one team is looking to select him, one way or another.
A CBS Sports mock draft from Friday has the New York Giants, who have the No. 3 pick, trading up with the Tennessee Titans to acquire the No. 1 pick and take Ward.
“The reports are that the Titans like Cam Ward, but they’ll probably like what the desperate Giants will offer them more,” wrote Kyle Stackpole. “After whiffing in free agency, New York trades up to draft its franchise quarterback.”
The problem with this move is that Ward wouldn’t have a lot of offensive support. He would be paired with wide receiver Darius Slayton
, who had a modest 573 yards and two touchdowns last season but just agreed to a three-year, $36 million contract extension.
