The Missouri Tigers football program has recently welcomed back one of its most esteemed alumni, Justin Smith, who has returned to his alma mater as the Director of Player Development. This significant appointment not only honors Smith’s legacy but also enriches the team’s culture and mentorship.
A Stellar Collegiate Career
Justin Smith’s tenure with the Missouri Tigers from 1998 to 2000 solidified his status as one of the program’s all-time greats. In his freshman year, he made an immediate impact by starting all 11 games—a feat not achieved since 1986. His performance earned him the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year honors, with impressive statistics that included 86 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks.
As a junior, Smith’s dominance continued. He set a school record with 11 sacks in a single season and accumulated 97 tackles along with 24 tackles for loss. These achievements led to first-team All-American honors and reinforced his status as a top defensive lineman.
For his professional career, Smith declared for the 2001 NFL Draft after his junior year and was selected fourth overall by the Cincinnati Bengals. Over a distinguished 14-season career, he played for both the Bengals and the San Francisco 49ers. Smith earned five Pro Bowl selections and was named the Sports Illustrated Defensive Player of the Year in 2011.
Return to Mizzou
After retiring from professional football, Smith’s connection to Mizzou remained strong. In 2015, he briefly joined the Tigers’ weight room staff, indicating his desire to give back to the program.
Now, as the Director of Player Development, Smith’s role transcends administrative duties; he serves as a mentor, guiding student-athletes both on and off the field. His deep understanding of the game, combined with his personal journey from a standout college player to a successful NFL veteran, positions him uniquely to support and inspire the next generation of Tigers.
