SAD DEPARTURE: Tom Izzo Confirms 5 Players Set to Depart from Michigan State Spartans

In a somber moment for Michigan State basketball fans, head coach Tom Izzo confirmed that five players will be departing from the Spartans program ahead of the 2025 season. The news, which came during a press conference on Monday, marks a significant transition for the team as it looks to rebuild and refocus for the future.

“This is the hardest part of the job,” Izzo said. “You build relationships with these young men. You go through battles together, grow together, and then comes the time when paths split. I’m proud of every one of them.”

Among the departures is senior guard A.J. Hoggard, who announced he will pursue a professional career, declaring for the NBA Draft after a solid season. Hoggard has been a key presence on the court for the Spartans, known for his playmaking, defensive grit, and leadership. His decision, while expected, still hits home for a program that has leaned on his veteran experience in big moments.

Joining Hoggard is junior forward Mady Sissoko, who also declared for the draft but is keeping the door open for overseas opportunities. Sissoko, a dominant force in the paint and a fan favorite due to his remarkable journey from Mali to Michigan, will be remembered for his shot-blocking and rebounding ability.

Sophomore guard Tre Holloman announced his decision to enter the transfer portal in search of a larger role. With Michigan State’s crowded backcourt, Holloman struggled to find consistent minutes, but he’s expected to draw strong interest from other major programs.

Also entering the transfer portal are Carson Cooper and Jaxon Kohler, two young big men who showed flashes of potential but are seeking more playing time and development opportunities elsewhere. Their departures leave a noticeable gap in the frontcourt depth, forcing the coaching staff to quickly re-evaluate its recruiting and development strategies.

“This is the nature of college basketball now,” Izzo admitted. “The transfer portal has changed the landscape, and you have to adapt. I’m not mad at these guys. They’re doing what they think is best for their futures, and I’ll always support them.”

Izzo emphasized that the door remains open for any of the players to return, should circumstances change. He also reassured fans that the Spartans are actively looking at both high school recruits and portal additions to replenish the roster and remain competitive in the Big Ten.

Despite the wave of departures, Izzo expressed optimism about the team’s future, highlighting the growth of underclassmen and the commitment of incoming recruits.

“Transitions are tough, but they also create opportunities,” he said. “I’m excited about the next chapter of Michigan State basketball.”

For now, though, fans will bid farewell to five players who wore the green and white with pride—each leaving a mark on the storied program, and each taking a piece of Spartan Nation with them.
