In a heartbreaking development for Florida Gators fans, Head Coach Todd Golden has broken his silence following a shocking announcement from the program’s general manager regarding freshman center Olivier Rioux. The towering 7-foot-9 Rioux, known globally as the world’s tallest teenager, will be redshirted for the entire 2024-25 season — a move that stunned supporters eager to see him take the court.
The decision, made in conjunction with Rioux and his family, stems from concerns about his readiness to compete at the collegiate level. Despite his unique physical presence, Rioux is still adjusting to the speed, physicality, and intensity of Division I basketball. The redshirt will allow him a full year to develop his skills and strength without losing a year of eligibility.
Coach Golden, addressing the media with emotion, said, “It’s tough. We know how excited everyone was to see Olivier in action, and trust me — we were too. But this decision is about his future. He’s got incredible potential, and we want to make sure he’s fully prepared to thrive, not just play.”
Golden also admitted that the public attention and chants from fans during games may have put added pressure on the young player. “He’s handled it with incredible maturity, but I should’ve communicated the plan earlier. It wasn’t fair to him,” Golden said.
The general manager’s announcement highlighted the long-term vision for Rioux, reinforcing that this redshirt season is about development, not disappointment.
While fans may be heartbroken now, the Gators coaching staff is confident that this decision will pay off in the long run. As Golden concluded, “This is just the beginning for Olivier. When he steps on the court, it’ll be worth the wait.”
