Lubbock, TX â April 11, 2025 â In a heartfelt and impactful gesture, Texas Tech Red Raiders head football coach Joey McGuire has donated his entire $2 million postseason bonus and endorsement earnings to support charities and organizations working to combat homelessness and assist underserved communities across Texas.
The university confirmed the news Friday morning, releasing a statement that praised McGuire for his âunmatched commitment to people, not just players.â According to the release, the full $2 million will be distributed among several nonprofits focusing on homelessness prevention, emergency shelter support, youth development, food insecurity, and mental health services.
In his own words, Coach McGuire explained the motivation behind the donation: âFootball gives us a platform, but what we do with that platform is what really counts. West Texas is my home, and I see the struggle too many families face every day. If I can use my success to make their lives a little better, thatâs a win Iâll always be proud of.â
McGuireâs donation will benefit a range of organizations including Lubbockâs Open Door, South Plains Food Bank, the Texas Homeless Network, and youth-focused outreach programs operating across underserved areas in West Texas. Part of the funding will also go toward transitional housing initiatives and job training programs aimed at helping families and individuals break the cycle of poverty.
Texas Tech University President Lawrence Schovanec applauded McGuireâs action, calling it âa moment that defines not just a coach, but a man of character and compassion.â
âThis isnât about publicityâitâs about people,â Schovanec said. âCoach McGuireâs gift will change lives. It shows whatâs possible when leadership is guided by empathy.â
McGuire, who has revitalized Texas Techâs football program with a culture rooted in toughness, family, and service, has always placed emphasis on doing the right thing off the field. His players and staff werenât surprised by his decision.
âThatâs just Coach,â said Red Raiders linebacker Jesiah Pierre. âHeâs always talking about putting others first. This just shows he means it.â
Social media quickly erupted with admiration for the coach, with fans across the Big 12 and beyond praising the bold and selfless gesture. Some even dubbed it the âmost powerful play of the season.â
While the donation came with no strings attached, sources close to the program said McGuire worked closely with local leaders and advocacy groups to ensure the funds would be used for maximum long-term impact.
âThis isnât a one-time headline for Coach,â said a university spokesperson. âHeâs already talking about ways to keep supporting these causes in the future.â
As the Red Raiders prepare for the upcoming season, McGuireâs move is being seen as a powerful example of leadership far beyond the gridironâa coach investing not just in wins, but in people.
