COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Gamecocks made a significant statement in the college football offseason by signing two talented quarterbacks, adding depth and competition to a key position ahead of the 2025 season. Head coach Shane Beamer and his staff have been focused on strengthening the roster, and the addition of these two signal-callers highlights the program’s commitment to building for both immediate success and long-term development.
The Gamecocks secured commitments from four-star recruit Marcus Dillard out of Tampa, Florida, and junior college standout Elijah “EJ” Carter from Independence Community College in Kansas. Both quarterbacks bring unique skill sets and could contribute to the team in different ways.
Dillard, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound dual-threat quarterback, was highly sought after during the recruiting cycle. Known for his strong arm, quick release, and ability to extend plays with his legs, Dillard passed for over 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns in his senior season at Hillsborough High School. He also rushed for 800 yards and 12 more scores, making him one of the most dynamic playmakers in the state.
“Marcus is a special talent,” Coach Beamer said in a press release. “He has the poise, athleticism, and leadership we look for in a quarterback. He’s got a bright future ahead of him, and we’re thrilled he chose to be a Gamecock.”
On the other hand, Carter offers experience and maturity. At 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, the JUCO product is coming off a breakout season in which he threw for 2,500 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. Carter is praised for his football IQ, pocket presence, and leadership qualities. His decision to transfer to South Carolina gives the Gamecocks a more seasoned option who can compete for the starting job right away.
“EJ is battle-tested,” said offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. “He’s played at a high level and brings a veteran presence to our QB room. He understands the game well, and we expect him to push everyone in that room to be better.”
The signing of both Dillard and Carter provides the Gamecocks with flexibility as they enter spring practices and eventually the 2025 season. With the departure of veteran quarterback Spencer Rattler to the NFL, the position was a major question mark heading into the offseason. Now, with a combination of youth and experience, South Carolina is in a much stronger position.
Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how the quarterback competition unfolds in the coming months. Returning redshirt freshman Tanner Bailey and sophomore LaNorris Sellers will also be vying for playing time, creating what could be one of the most competitive position battles in the SEC.
For the Gamecocks, the signing of Dillard and Carter signals a clear message: the future is now, and South Carolina is serious about taking the next step as a program. With a reloaded quarterback room, the 2025 season is shaping up to be one of high expectations and opportunity in Columbia.
