After nearly three decades of leadership, inspiration, and a lasting legacy at Michigan State University, legendary head basketball coach Tom Izzo has officially announced his retirement. The 70-year-old coaching icon, who has been the face of Spartans basketball since 1995, made the emotional announcement in a press conference covered by ESPN, marking the end of one of the most remarkable careers in college basketball history.

 

 

 

Izzo, who led the Spartans to a national championship in 2000 and eight Final Four appearances, has long been considered one of the most respected and successful coaches in the game. Known for his passionate coaching style, tireless work ethic, and unwavering commitment to his players both on and off the court, Izzo’s impact on the Michigan State program—and college basketball as a whole—is immeasurable.

his successor, Izzo assured fans that the program is in good hands. “This is not goodbye,” he said, smiling through tears. “I’ll always be around. Once a Spartan, always a Spartan.”

 

 

 

Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz praised Izzo’s contributions, calling him “one of the greatest ambassadors the university has ever known.” Plans are already underway to honor Izzo with a statue outside the Breslin Center and rename the basketball court in his honor.
