Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Oilers have officially named Kris Knoblauch as the 18th head coach in franchise history, the team announced today. Knoblauch brings a wealth of experience and a strong track record from his time as the head coach of the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Hartford Wolf Pack, the primary affiliate of the New York Rangers. The move signals a fresh direction for the Oilers as they look to ignite their performance and achieve their lofty expectations.
Knoblauch, 46, joins the Oilers after spending nearly five seasons at the helm of the Wolf Pack. During his tenure in Hartford, he compiled a respectable record of 119-90-32, guiding the team to the third round of the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs, marking a significant step forward for the organization. His ability to develop young talent and implement a winning system in the AHL was a key factor in the Oilers’ decision.
“We are very pleased to welcome Kris Knoblauch to the Edmonton Oilers,” said Oilers General Manager Ken Holland in a press conference. “Kris possesses a strong coaching pedigree, a proven ability to lead and develop players, and a winning track record at the AHL level. We believe his experience and his approach will be valuable assets to our team as we strive to reach our full potential.”
Prior to his successful stint in the AHL, Knoblauch built an impressive resume in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Erie Otters. Taking over head coaching duties mid-season in 2012-13, he led the Otters to an unprecedented four consecutive 50-win seasons. His tenure in Erie included an OHL Finals appearance in 2014-15 and culminated in an OHL Championship title in 2017. He was also recognized as the OHL Coach of the Year in 2015-16.
Knoblauch’s coaching journey also includes a two-season stint as an assistant coach with the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers from 2017 to 2019, providing him with valuable experience at the highest level of professional hockey. His diverse background, spanning junior hockey, the AHL, and the NHL, offers a comprehensive understanding of player development and team dynamics across different levels.
“I am incredibly excited and honored to be named the head coach of the Edmonton Oilers,” said Knoblauch. “This is a tremendous opportunity to work with a talented group of players in a passionate hockey market. I am eager to get started, build strong relationships with the team, and work towards achieving our collective goals. My focus will be on fostering a winning culture, emphasizing structure and accountability, and maximizing the potential of every player on the roster.”
The appointment of Knoblauch marks a significant change for the Oilers, who have been seeking consistent success despite boasting some of the league’s most dynamic offensive talents. His reputation for strong communication and his ability to implement effective systems are seen as crucial elements in unlocking the team’s full potential.
Knoblauch’s familiarity with some of the Oilers’ younger players, who have come through the AHL ranks, could also prove beneficial in establishing a strong rapport and fostering their continued development at the NHL level. His experience in leading high-powered offensive teams in junior hockey also aligns with the Oilers’ offensive strengths.
The Edmonton Oilers organization and their passionate fanbase will be eagerly watching as Kris Knoblauch steps behind the bench, hoping his experience and leadership from the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack can translate into sustained success and guide the team towards their ultimate aspirations. The Knoblauch era in Edmonton has officially begun, bringing with it a renewed sense of optimism and anticipation for th
e future.
