In a significant move just ahead of the NHL trade deadline, the Dallas Stars have acquired Finnish forward Mikko Rantanen from the Carolina Hurricanes. This trade also includes a substantial eight-year, $96 million contract extension for Rantanen, ensuring his presence in Dallas through the 2032-33 season.
Rantanen, 28, has demonstrated exceptional skill and consistency throughout his career. Prior to joining Carolina in January 2025, he spent the majority of the season with the Colorado Avalanche, amassing 64 points (25 goals and 39 assists) in 49 games. After his brief tenure with the Hurricanes, where he contributed six points in 13 games, Rantanen now brings his talents to Dallas.
In exchange for Rantanen, the Hurricanes receive forward Logan Stankoven, a 2026 first-round pick (top-10 protected, converting to an unprotected 2027 first-round pick if not conveyed), a 2026 third-round pick, a 2027 third-round pick, and a 2028 first-round pick (top-10 protected, converting to an unprotected 2029 first-round pick if not conveyed).
Stars General Manager Jim Nill expressed enthusiasm about acquiring Rantanen, highlighting his exceptional skill, vision on the ice, and versatility as a complete player. Nill also noted that Rantanen’s postseason experience would be invaluable to the team’s pursuit of a Stanley Cup.
