Just in: Sad news as 49ers HC is hospitalized.
The Positive and Negative from the First Day of 49ers Minicamp
THE BEST
1. DE Floyd Leonard. recorded a sack while positioned across from Colton McKivitz (more on him in a moment) on third and eight. Floyd easily defeated him, and afterward, he celebrated the victory with his teammates and coaches on the sidelines, acting as though defeating McKivitz wasn’t worth celebrating. Still, a victory is a victory, so why not show off? In contrast to Nick Bosa, Floyd is by far the best edge rusher the 49ers have ever had; he’s even better than Dee Ford, who was usually injured.
2. DC Sorensen, Nick. called several nickelback and safety-heavy third-down blitzes and pressures, something that former defensive coordinator Steve Wilks hardly ever did in the previous season. The 49ers’ pass rush seems to be more complex and exotic this season than it was last.
3. WR Pearsall Ricky. Though he hasn’t yet defeated any of the 49ers’ starting cornerbacks, he has annihilated their reserves, particularly Samuel Womack (who will be discussed further in a moment). Today, the two were matched up a lot, and Womack was unable to contain him. If Pearsall is given a free release at the line of scrimmage, he may be quite cunning. He may not always play at the 4.4 speed he showed at the Combine, so cornerbacks won’t be afraid to run him down on fade routes. However, he excels at running all short and intermediate routes, as well as crossers and deep comebacks. On third and 5, he even outran Renardo Green with a fast out route that resulted in a seven-yard gain.
4. NCB Green Renardo. allowed Pearsall to have one first-down grab, but stopped Jauan Jennings (more on him in a moment), twice in the end zone. Green has a really sticky covering style, thus Jennings was unable to get rid of him.
5. LB Winters, Dee. intercepted Brandon Allen (who will be discussed more in a moment) while man-to-man covering Eric Saubert in the end zone. Winters followed his lead, rounded a corner, made the catch, and handed it back for a big gain. Compared to his rookie season last year, he appears considerably improved.
6. TE Saubert Eric. caught a touchdown ball in the red zone from Joshua Dobbs, while Logan, a recent signing, Thomas, who is still unfamiliar with the offense, watched from the sidelines. Given that Saubert is a more adept blocker than Thomas, he may end up playing more than Thomas.
7. RB Mason Jordan. caught a touchdown pass in the red zone from Brock Purdy. Not only is Mason a fantastic runner, but unlike Elijah Mitchell (more on him in a moment), he has also turned into an excellent route runner who hardly ever drops the ball.
THOSE NOT SO GOOD
1. Jauan Jennings, WR. Who didn’t beat Samuel Womack for a catch? However, Renardo Green, a rookie, was too strong for them. In fairness, Jennings doesn’t always perform well at camp. He is a video gamer who enjoys the aggression of football, which is absent from minicamp.
2. RB Eli Mitchell. caught a pass in the flat as he was out of bounds walking. He hesitated with both feet beyond the sideline after running an excessively wide swing pattern and eventually caught a check-down from Brock Purdy. Defense players laughed at Mitchell right away, without even realizing what he had done. Of all the running backs, he is the worst receiver by a wide margin.
3. Colton McKivitz, Right. inability to stop Leonard Floyd one-on-one in team exercises. The 49ers probably won’t play those two much against one another in the offseason as Floyd will just undermine McKivitz’s remaining confidence.
4. QB Allen Brandon. took all of the second-team reps and, in a 7-on-7 drill in the red zone, threw an interception straight to linebacker Dee Winters, meaning there was no pass rush. Allen was picked even though he forced a pass into close coverage. Of the three quarterbacks for the 49ers, he is also the least accurate and decisive. Even though he has only been on the squad for a few months, Joshua Dobbs moves the ball around much more quickly.
5. CB Womack, Samuel. began at right cornerback due to lack of practice for Charvarius Ward, Deommodore Lenoir, and Ambry Thomas. Womack was also unable to cover anyone. He’s not a cornerback in the NFL. He will shortly become a free agent.
6. RB Guerendo, Isaac. the lone running back who lost balance during a carry and fell face-first. This offseason, Guerendo has often demonstrated that in front of the media. It appears that he has no idea where the holes will be.
