Chance Gray, formerly associated with the Oregon Ducks, has decided to join the women’s basketball team at Ohio State.

The Buckeyes have recruited a guard proficient in three-point shooting from Cincinnati via the transfer portal.

The transfer period has brought significant changes for Ohio State women’s basketball since it began on March 18. After being knocked out in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, the team experienced a loss as three players—Rikki Harris, Emma Shumate, and Diana Collins—decided to transfer, looking for fresh opportunities elsewhere. However, Ohio State made a move to bolster their roster by welcoming Chance Gray, a talented sophomore with a strong shooting ability. Gray, originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, shared her commitment to the Buckeyes on social media, indicating she has at least two seasons of eligibility left.

Since joining the NCAA ranks with the Oregon Ducks, Gray has been a consistent starter, featuring in all 66 games she played for the soon-to-be Big Ten team. In the 22/23 season, Gray earned a spot on the Pac-12 All-Freshman team, averaging 10.3 points and 2.2 assists per game.

This season, Gray demonstrated improvement across the board, increasing her scoring to 13.9 points per game and her assists to 3.0 per game, ranking second in scoring and first in assists for the Ducks.

In terms of playing style, Gray’s game resembles that of former Buckeye guard Jacy Sheldon, who has since graduated. Like Sheldon, Gray exhibits versatility in scoring, being proficient at all three levels of the court. She can shoot from deep, averaging the same number of made threes per game as Sheldon with 1.9, and utilizes her speed and ball-handling skills to drive to the basket.

With two years remaining, Gray has considerable potential to thrive in head coach Kevin McGuff’s system. Her return also marks the reconnection with McGuff, who recruited her prior to her debut season in 22/23. Gray had visited Ohio State officially during her high school recruitment and had included the Buckeyes in her top 11 schools before ultimately choosing the Ducks.
